Scammers often have a long list of excuses about why the rental property can’t be shown, Abel said, such as the owner is working out of town or no one is available to show the property. The wire location may not match the city the scammer calls home, Abel said. With a transaction ID number, the cash can be picked up anywhere, he said. Abel said the scam is happening coast to coast.
